During the 2001 NHL entry draft the Senators made a trade with New York Islanders sending Alexei Yashin to the Islanders in exchange for Zdeno Chara, Bill Muckalt and the 2nd overall pick which the Senators used to pick top CHL prospect Jason Spezza. Spezza is a dynamic offensive center with fantastic playmaking abilities because of his ability to see the ice so well. He played his first NHL season in 2003-2004 recording 55 points in 78 games. After the lockout of the 2004-2005 NHL season Spezza has been one of the most productive players in the league being only one of a select few players to score at a point per game pace. In his early days in the league he was known for making defensive mistakes trying to make plays but has since tried to become more of a two-way forward. He has been rewarded for this by being named an assistant captain this season. The organization sees Jason being a captain once current captain Daniel Alfredsson retires.
Daniel Alfredsson
Positon: Right Wing
Number: 11
Weight: 200 Ibs
Height: 5'11"
Daniel Alfredsson was drafted 133rd overall in the sixth round in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, by the Ottawa Senators. Largely overlooked by NHL scouts, Alfredsson would go on to win the Calder Memorial Trophy—an award given annually to the rookie of the year— during the 1995-1996 season. In 1998, Alfredsson succeeded Alexei Yashin as captain of the Ottawa Senators. Alfredsson posted his career high in points during the 2005-2006 season, in which he acquired 103 points (including 43 goals and 60 assists).
Sergei Gonchar was acquired by the Ottawa Senators via free agency on July 1st, 2010. He has played for 4 NHL teams (Washington, Boston, Pittsburgh and Ottawa) and was drafted 14th overall by the Washington Capitals in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. He has reached the Stanley Cup final twice in his career, both as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and won the cup in the 2008-2009 season. Gonchar is an elite offensive defenceman who has generated 50 or more points 7 times in his career. The organization is looking for him to be a mentor to young offensive defensemen Erik Karlsson and David Rundblad.
Chris Phillips is a defensive defenseman who was drafted by the Senators in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft 1st overall. He has had a wonderful career playing on the Senators 1st and 2nd defense pairings along side players such as Wade Redden, Zdeno Chara and Anton Volchenkov. This past season, Phillips struggled, along with most other players on the team, and put up a career worst plus minus of -35. The organization is hoping he can rebound from those number and be a mentor to other defensive prospects, such as Jared Cowen, in how to be a successful defenseman in the NHL.
Although Erik Karlsson is only 20 years old he has quickly become a fan favorite because of his electrifying offensive capabilities and vision. Karlsson was drafted 15th overall by the Senators in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He stepped in to the Senators roster the season following his draft because the organization was in desperate need of a puck-moving defenceman. After 10 games, Karlsson was demoted to the organizations AHL affiliate, the Binghampton Senators, for a conditioning stint in which he could get accustomed to the size of the North American ice and work on the defensive part of his game. After 10 games he was called up to the big club and went on to have a very productive year recording 26 points in 60 games. The following season he improved those point totals to 45 points in 75 games. The organization is hoping that he can continue his rapid progression and become an elite puck moving defenseman in the league as well as help other swedes, such as David Rundblad and Mika Zibanejad, become adjusted to life in North America.
